Carpet protectants work to create a barrier around the fibers in your carpets and upholstery items, like couches and curtains, to aid and help resist soiling and staining by allowing spills to be removed and cleaned up before staining can occur. This means that if you spill something on your carpet, you will be able to clean it up off of the protectant layer because it will not have touched or seeped into the actual carpet yet. A helpful analogy for carpet protectant is to think of it as saran wrap. Imagine that you put down a layer of saran wrap over your entire carpet. If you have a big party, you are going to get crumbs all over the carpet and people will be spilling drinks on it left and right. When the party is over, however, clean up will be so much easier! All you will have to do is pick up the saran wrap and throw it away. All of the crumbs and liquids that were spilled on the carpet will have landed on the saran wrap, not on your actual carpet! The liquid will not seep into the carpet fibers because it will not have actually touched it! This way, mold can never grow from the liquid as it never had a chance to bury itself in the materials. Carpet protectant is similar. It protects the top layer of your carpet from spills and spots so that you can clean your carpet easier and faster! One of the main mistakes that people make, however, is trying to apply the carpet protectant on your own. Many homeowners make mistakes when applying the protectant themselves because they are not familiar with the protectant and what it is made of, so they either use too much or too little. The problem with using too little is that you may as well not use any at all if you’re not going to use enough. While it will help a little bit, it won’t protect your carpet as much as it could, and should. You will also have to reapply it, whereas if you use the right amount the first time, it will last a long time and be well worth the money. On the other end of the spectrum, if you use too much, you risk doing permanent damage to your carpet fibers because of the toxicity of the protectant. It can also leave behind a strong odor, which in turn can leave behind harmful breathing air and be a health risk to you and your family.
